macOS menu bar app

Light up the window
you're working in.

MindLight automatically dims background windows so your attention stays on the app in front — quietly, from the menu bar. No subscriptions. No account.

Requires macOS 15.7 or later · Lives in your menu bar

Built for deep work on a busy desktop

A focused take on window dimming — with the polish you expect from a native Mac utility.

Behind-window dimming

A full-screen overlay slips behind your active window. Everything else darkens while the front app stays crisp and untouched.

Spotlight cutout

Prefer a literal spotlight? Overlay mode cuts a hole that tracks your front window as you move and resize it.

Light & Dark settings

Separate intensity and color for each system appearance. Link them or tune independently.

Wallpaper-aware tint

Optionally sample your desktop wallpaper and tint the dim to match your space instead of flat black.

Menu bar control

Toggle dimming, pick intensity, and open Preferences from one icon. Smooth fades with adjustable animation duration.

Less noise, more focus. MindLight is a lightweight alternative to heavy focus suites — one job, done well: dim what's not in front.

Get MindLight

How it works

Install once. It runs quietly until you need it.

  1. Install from the App Store

MindLight lives in your menu bar — no Dock icon, no clutter. Launch it once and it remembers your settings.

  2. Switch apps as usual

When you bring a window forward, MindLight repositions the dim overlay so the active app stays bright and everything else recedes.

  3. Tune it to taste

Open Preferences to set intensity, color, dimming mode, and animation. Quick intensity presets are one click away in the menu.
